I specialise in environmental and humanitarian reporting and have presented BBC radio documentaries on subjects ranging from shamanism, snow leopards and the Black Mountains, to community conservation in the Northeast Indian state of Nagaland and the rise of vehicle dwellers in the UK. Over the past five years I’ve also filed stories from Myanmar, Georgia, Tajikistan, India and Laos for Radio 4’s From Our Own Correspondent. One of these stories, about Sarni, a teacher I met in northern Myanmar, was chosen for Radio 4’s Pick of the Week. Broadcasting fits in with my love of lo-fi solo travel - no cameras or TV crews; just me and my trusty microphone, chatting to people about their lives, loves, fears and dreams.

As with my writing, I’m interested in stories about conservation, Indigenous Rights, social justice and threatened people and places. I’m looking for those tales at the edges of things, for the gaps in our knowledge, for the places we don’t often hear stories from.

My most recent projects have been a Crossing Continents about Cyprus, New Nomads, Future Shaman and Laos: 50 years after the Vietnam War. New Nomads, part of BBC Radio 4 and 5 Live’s Rental Health season, aired in March 2023 and was a Guardian, Telegraph, Radio Times, TV Times and Sunday Times pick of the week. It was also chosen for Radio 4’s Pick of the Week. Future Shaman was one of BBC World Services most downloaded programmes of the week, and was featured on Pick of the World. Laos: 50 years after the Vietnam War was also featured on Radio 4’s Pick of the Week.

A selection of my broadcasts are linked below, and all of them are available to listen to on BBC Sounds.
